They are not questioning God nearly as much as they are questioning Western Christianity.

Good stuff (as always) over at Rick’s place.

This post makes SO much sense to me, and explains well why I feel much more comfortable talking about God, religion, and spirituality with people who aren’t so churched. A noteable exception: recently, I visited with a couple from my parents’ house-church. I was deeply impressed with these folks, especially how — in the face of a “don’t dare question anything” religious climate — they taught their daughters to ask as many questions as came to mind. I imagine there were several pissed off Sunday-school teachers left in their wake.

Once I let go of my assumptions that I knew who God is, and what it meant to be a Christian (ie, what I knew while growing up), I found myself much closer to God, and much more interested in learning more.
